Kimiko Date Krumm joked that she doesn’t ask the age of her opponents. Instead, she asks how old their mothers are, because she can better relate to that generation. A case in point came Tuesday, when the 38-year-old Date Krumm lost to Sabine Lisicki of Germany, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-5, in the first round of the LA Women’s Tennis Championships at The Home Depot Center.

PG Jason Williams works out for Knicks (AP)
Jason Williams has worked out for the New York Knicks, though the team made no contract offer to the point guard. Williams, who worked out Tuesday, is attempting a return from retirement this summer and the Knicks claimed him off waivers last week. They will retain exclusive negotiating rights if they make a contract offer by Thursday.

James scores 30 as Heat hold off Raptors (AP)
MIAMI (AP)LeBron James scored 30 points, Dwyane Wade had 25 and the Miami Heat survived a shaky fourth quarter to beat the Toronto Raptors 95-89 on Sunday afternoon. Chris Bosh scored 12 points against his former team, which saw a 15-point edge trimmed to three in the final minutes but never surrendered the lead. Mario Chalmers added 11 for Miami. DeMar DeRozan scored 25 for the Raptors, who got 17 apiece from Jerryd Bayless and Linas Kleiza. Miami won for the 10th time in its last 12 games and moved within one game of Chicago for the best record in the Eastern Conference. The Bulls and Heat both have six losses, and Miami has two games in hand. Kleizas 3-pointer with just under 5 minutes left got Toronto within eight, and another 3 from Bayless as the shot clock expired on the next Raptors possession cut the Miami lead to 85-80the closest the game had been since early in the third quarter. Bayless scored again to get the Raptors within three and cap a 12-0 Toronto run. And after Bosh missed a fadeaway from the right baseline, Bayless tried a 3-pointer to tie. It bounced off, and with the game in the balance, James went to work. He took a hard foul from James Johnson and made two free throws with 2:20 left, not before letting anyone around him know he wasnt pleased with the physicality of the play. So the next time he touched the ball, he didnt give the Raptors a chance to foul himhis steal and two-handed slam with 2:07 left restored some breathing room, giving Miami an 89-82 edge and all but sealing the win. Jameswho leads the NBA in first-quarter scoring this season (9.1 points a game)got off to another big start, making his first five shots and scoring 12 points in the opening quarter. Hes now shooting just under 60 percent in first quarters this season. So while scoring wasnt an issue, the Heat were far from in the clear. This team thrives on turnovers, Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. And once they get in the open floor, you can cancel Christmas. Casey told the Raptors that establishing pace and limiting turnovers especially earlywould be big keys. Seemed like his team got the message: The Raptors matched a season-high with 27 points in the first quarter, and turned the ball over only five times in the first half. That, combined with DeRozan tying his season best with 16 points in the opening two quarters, kept the Raptors close. Miamis lead was only 53-48 at the break, and that was even after James and Wade combined to score 22 points in the opening quarter on 8 for 9 shooting. In the third quarter, the Heat finally took controlnot surprisingly, when the defense picked up a notch. Toronto missed all but one of its shots over a 7-minute stretch of the third, a span where Miami started with a 55-54 lead and increased it 73-57. Chalmers hit back-to-back 3-pointers late in the 18-3 run, James made a fadeaway with 3:27 to play in the period to close the flurry. And, just as Casey feared, turnovers proved decisive. Toronto committed eight in the third, which Miami turned into nine points. Miami gave the ball away only twice in the third, and the Raptors didnt score on either. Notes: It was the second straight year Miami played at home on Super Bowl Sunday. The Heat beat the Clippers last year in a game that started at noon and with James half-seriously asking officials to speed things along. Miami has beaten the Raptors six straight times. It was Raptors C Jamaal Magloires first time visiting Miami as an opponent since March 2008. The Toronto native had spent the past three seasons with the Heat and remains close to several former teammates. He was about as pure as anybody we have ever had as a role player, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

President Obama wont commit to a Super Bowl pick
Campaign years are all about hedging. Why say something definitive and upset half the country when you can speak in circles and say nothing at all? That’s the strategy President Barack Obama is going with when asked for his Super Bowl XLVI pick: “I can’t call it. I can’t call it,” Obama said of the New England Patriots-New York Giants game in an ABC News exclusive with Diane Sawyer. “When the [Chicago] Bears are not involved, I can’t make predictions because I will get into trouble. But both are great teams. [Tom] Brady obviously one of the best quarterbacks we’ve ever seen. Eli Manning playing as well as he’s ever played, and it’s going to be a fun Super Bowl.” On one level, that’s exceedingly lame. How can a guy who gives his opinion on a first-round NCAA tournament game between Baylor and Sam Houston State cop out on making a pick for the biggest sporting event of the year? On another level, the president has to consider November’s election. He doesn’t need to worry about winning New York, but New Jersey and Massachusetts could be battleground states. Picking one team over the other could alienate some voters. Granted, someone who would base their presidential vote on who Obama picks in the Super Bowl is unlikely to be a voter and/or prove capable of finding his polling place on a map. In other news, Mitt Romey has yet to make his Super Bowl pick, though you’d assume the former Massachusetts governor will go with New England … and then change his pick to New York at the last minute. ESPN first reported that the Bucs and Schiano are close to an agreement. The 46-year-old Schiano has been with the Scarlet Knights for 11 seasons, taking them from college football laughingstock to a program that has had winning records in six of the last seven years. He was an assistant coach in the NFL with Chicago from 1996-98. He was the University of Miamis defensive coordinator for two seasons before returning to his home state to coach Rutgers in 2001. Schiano is 68-67 at Rutgers. The Bucs fired Raheem Morris earlier this month after Tampa Bay went 4-12 in his third season with the team.

Prospects look to impress in Shrine game (AP)
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP)Goodbye spread offense, hello pro-style attack. Former NFL coaches Brad Childress and Bobby Ross have a good understanding of what it takes for college prospects to succeed on the next level. They are showing players in Saturdays East-West Shrine all-star game some things that will help them showcase their skills for scouts and others evaluating their potential. While many of the players likely to be drafted early in the NFL draft are headed to Mobile, Ala., for next weeks Senior Bowl, the standouts that Childress and Ross have worked with over the past week are getting an opportunity to impress teams that might consider selecting them in later rounds. Northwestern quarterback Dan Persa is here. So are Northern Illinois Chandler Harnish and Floridas John Brantley, also hoping to show where they stack up in a draft class thats almost certain to be led in April by likely No. 1 overall pick Andrew Luck. Receivers B.J. Cunningham of Michigan State and Greg Childs of Arkansas, Boise State defensive lineman Tyrone Crawford, TCU linebacker Tank Carder and cornerback Justin Bethel of tiny Presbyterian College are among those trying to bolster their stock as well. This is a huge game for me. I can show that even though I went to a little school, Im capable of competing at the highest level, Bethel said. This is a week to make my name, this and the (NFL) combine. I feel like Im on a level playing field. It doesnt matter what school youre from out there. If you make a play, people are going to notice. Thats what Childress and Ross have in mind. Although spread offenses have become very popular in the college game, pro teams are interested in finding out more about how players might fit into schemes theyre likely to be asked to learn when they wind up in NFL or even Canadian Football League training camps. Some of these guys have worked in offenses that dont necessarily translate to what theyll be doing in the NFL. Im a coach who believes in the players making the system, not the system making the player. The talent is going to shine through, Ross said. Nobodys paying attention right now to any one particular person. For the guys who were the big guys on their team, this is a little bit of a different deal. Its a little more like what theyll be seeing when they get in a camp. The talent level goes up. Our job is to put in a base operation, then let them perform. Let these scouts evaluate them. They dont want a spread offense. They want a pro offense. Childress, who recently interviewed the head coaching vacancy with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, agreed. This also is a great place to see who can take in a lot of new information and transfer it quickly to the field. Thats one quality everyone is watching, the former Minnesota Vikings coach said. Were limited by formation, but were not limited by volume. So you throw it all at them and see what sticks. Persa and Harnish, wholl play for the West, are eager to get on the field. For me, its an opportunity to work in a pro-style offense after working so much in a spread. Im looking forward to improving, Persa said. This is a crazy week. Its about seeing something, walking through something, then having to execute it pretty quickly. Youve just got to go play. You cant be looking around, worrying about what they think about you. Most of what youve done is on film. This is a chance to refine the process and let them get to know you a little more. Harnish and Brantley, whos playing for the East, likened the experience of learning a new offense and preparing for the game at Tropicana Field to a week-long interview for a job. Its a cram session. There are whole new concepts we have to learn and a whole new set of terminology. Were getting together with new guys and trying to get down our timing. Weve got to learn to step around and deal with an NFL-style pass rush. This is huge for us, Harnish said. At the beginning, everybody was still a little confused, but then everybody picked up on it easier, Brantley said. You can learn a bunch. Youve learned so much in the past, but theres always more. Youre never perfect. You never know it all. The more you can pick up here, the better.

Twins RHP Zumaya: I’ll hit 100 mph again (AP)
MINNEAPOLIS (AP)Joel Zumaya has painfully realized the potential hazard of his natural gift. Being able to throw the ball incredibly hard can come with a price. So as the right-hander resumes his career with Minnesota, Zumaya will bring a different mentality to the mound. If hes healthyhe said Thursday he feels greathell still be relied on to strike opponents out in the late innings. But his breaking and off-speed pitches will be an important part of his repertoire. Not just the 100-mile-per-hour heat. Ive grown up a little bit, said Zumaya, the former Detroit reliever who signed a one-year contract with the Twins this week for an $850,000 base salary plus as much as $900,000 in performance-based bonuses. You cant just throw 100 by people right now. For me, 100 is overrated. There are quite a few athletes who throw 100, and hitters are timing it now. Zumaya said hes worked extensively on his curveball and changeup this offseason, as part of his comeback from a broken elbow. That happened during a delivery to then-Twins outfielder Delmon Young, one of his close friends, from the mound at Target Field on June 28, 2010. That was the last day he pitched in a real game for the Tigers, and it felt like the joint exploded, he said. That was the latest significant injury to his right arm since an exceptional rookie year in 2006 that featured 97 strikeouts in 83 1-3 innings, a 1.94 ERA and an appearance in the World Series. He hasnt pitched more than 39 innings since then. He missed big chunks of the 2008 and 2009 seasons because of shoulder problems and was out of commission for much of the year before that with a middle finger strain. Finally, in 2010, Zumaya was back in form, putting up eye-popping numbers on the in-stadium radar screens, posting a 2.58 ERA in 38 1-3 innings with 34 strikeouts and just 11 walks, the best ratio of his career. But then came that sickening sound from his elbow. It knocked me down to my knees. I havent been knocked down to my knees since a high-school fight, Zumaya said on a conference call with reporters. I had no idea if I was going to be able to pitch on the baseball field again. He felt pain last spring and eventually needed a second surgery to reposition the screw that was placed in his arm and wasnt able to return in time to participate in 2011. Now, after extra time to heal, he said hes fully healthy. Zumaya passed his physical exam Wednesday. I just had an X-ray yesterday, and it looked remarkable, Zumaya said, adding: Being out the whole year basically gave me the whole year I needed for this arm to get recuperated and healthy. The Tigers offered him a minor league contract to make the team out of spring training, but he decidedno hard feelings, he saidto take the best offer with the AL Central rival Twins. Zumaya threw 40 pitches for scouts from several teams last month in the Houston area at about 70 or 80 percent strength, he said. Its well-known that I can try to touch triple digits, but my thoughts were just going in there and displaying how my arm was, how I was feeling, how my body was doing and what Im capable of doing, Zumaya said. That capability includes, of course, reaching back and trying to blow one of those flaming fastballs by former teammate Miguel Cabrera or American League newbie Albert Pujols when he has to. Im 27 years old. I still have a lot of gas in my tank, Zumaya said. Im going to turn it up a notch on those boys, but right now I think I can get away with 95 or 96, finding the strike zone, throwing a curveball and throwing a nice little changeup. According to the advanced baseball research website fangraphs.com, Zumaya was averaging 99 mph with his fastball before his last injury. Roughly 80 percent of the pitches hes thrown in his career have been fastballs. There aint no doubt in me that Ill touch triple digits again. Maybe in the summer when its warm and Im feeling good. Maybe against those Tigers, he said. That would work for the Twins. They badly needed a power arm in the back of their bullpen after finishing last in the majors with a collective 4.51 relief ERA last year. Hopefully we can keep him on the mound, general manager Terry Ryan said. Everybody knows hes had some problems injury-wise, but he is healthy now. He fits perfectly for us. (AP)A former PGA golfer is among 40 suspects arrested in central Florida as part of an underage sex sting operation. Osceola County Sheriffs detectives said Tuesday that pro golfer Steve Thomas was charged with traveling to seduce an underage girl and using a computer to entice a legal guardian or parent to commit sex acts on an underage girl. There was no telephone listing for Thomas at the Meridian, Miss., address he gave detectives and he couldnt be reached for comment Tuesday. Thomas played one season on the PGA Tour, had one top-10 finish and won $25,781. He last played on the Champions Tour, the PGAs senior circuit, in 2010. Also arrested during the weeklong sex sting operation were a Gainesville swim instructor, an eighth-grade teacher and eight college students.

Fever assistant Kloppenburg to coach WNBA’s Shock (AP)
TULSA, Okla. (AP)The Tulsa Shock hired Indiana Fever assistant Gary Kloppenburg on Tuesday to be their next head coach. Kloppenburg spent the past four seasons with the Fever, who made the playoffs each of those seasons and lost in the Eastern Conference finals last year. He also has been an assistant coach for the WNBAs Seattle Storm and the Charlotte Bobcats of the NBA. He replaces Hall of Fame player Teresa Edwards, who took over on an interim basis after Nolan Richardson stepped down last season. Kloppenburg will be charged with improving the franchise with the leagues worst record of the past two seasons, following a relocation from Detroit. The Shock won only three games last season and are 9-59 in two seasons in Tulsa. I am really excited about the opportunity to come to Tulsa, rolling up my sleeves and getting to work on building a winning franchise, Kloppenburg said in a statement released by the team. Ill work non-stop with our staff and front office to build a team that the community can be proud of. We have a good core of young players to build around and with the upcoming free agency period and draft, we will have a chance to be competitive right away. Kloppenburg will be formally introduced Wednesday. His former boss, Indianas Lin Dunn, predicted that Kloppenburg will make Tulsa an immediate playoff contender. We are extremely excited and looking forward to Gary leading our team on the court in 2012 and beyond, team owner Bill Cameron said. His experience in this league along with his reputation and basketball knowledge will translate to progress on the court in 2012. Despite having the leagues worst record each of the past two seasons, Tulsa again wont have the No. 1 pick in this years draft. The Shock lost the draft lottery and wont select until the fourth pick. They also have the 17th and 25th picks. Kloppenburg also expressed hope that Tulsa will pursue free agents once the signing period begins Jan. 15. There are a number of excellent free agents available that I am confident will want to come to Tulsa and become a part of a franchise on the rise, and we will be aggressively reaching out to them in the coming months, Kloppenburg said. I envision a Shock team next season that will play tough and aggressive pressure defense as well as be able to run an up tempo and early flow offense. We know we have a lot of hard work to do in 2012, but good players and coaches relish challenges such as the one in front of us.
