Kimiko Date Krumm joked that she doesn’t ask the age of her opponents. Instead, she asks how old their mothers are, because she can better relate to that generation. A case in point came Tuesday, when the 38-year-old Date Krumm lost to Sabine Lisicki of Germany, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-5, in the first round of the LA Women’s Tennis Championships at The Home Depot Center.

PG Jason Williams works out for Knicks (AP)
Jason Williams has worked out for the New York Knicks, though the team made no contract offer to the point guard. Williams, who worked out Tuesday, is attempting a return from retirement this summer and the Knicks claimed him off waivers last week. They will retain exclusive negotiating rights if they make a contract offer by Thursday.

Greg Oden underwent the same knee procedure that served Kobe Bryant and Alex Rodriguez so well
Greg Oden, spinning in a centrifuge (Getty Images) It’s become apparent that former No. 1 overall pick Greg Oden is going all-out, in his attempts to recover from the litany of knee injuries that limited him to just 82 total games in five seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers. The free-agent center, according to ESPN’s Chris Broussard, underwent the same knee treatment that Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant and New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez underwent in Germany to correct their balky knees. The technical difference is that Oden had his procedure performed in New York. The sad difference is that both Bryant and Rodriguez are in their mid-30s, and have championships to their credit. Oden, at age 24, has no such pedigree. Only potential, as it’s always been, cruelly cut down by a series of unfortunate maladies that resulted in an NBA-unprecedented third microfracture surgery. Oden has been in the news quite a bit since the Blazers released him in March. He was the subject of some discussion as to the Portland staff’s role in his botched recovery, his admission to drinking heavily and struggling with the pressures of his status as the top pick in the 2007 draft, and his willingness to (of course) want to play for the downright center-less Miami Heat all hit our site this spring. Now, according to Broussard, he went to great and experimental lengths in order to strengthen those knees for one last attempt to cash in on that tantalizing potential. Here’s Chris: Bryant underwent the procedure, known as Orthokine, in Germany last offseason to relieve pain in his right knee and left ankle and returned to have a historically productive year in this, his 16th NBA season. Under Bryant’s advice, Yankees superstar Rodriguez flew to Dusseldorf to have the procedure done in December. Gilbert Arenas also had the procedure done. The procedure involves doctors taking the patient’s own blood, spinning it in a centrifuge, making a serum and then injecting it into the knee. Doctors claim the blood then works to stop inflammation and reduce pain and cartilage damage. (An aside: Kobe Bryant had an absolutely fantastic year in 2011-12, but what was “historically productive” about it? Did he break some record we were unaware of?) Broussard quotes a source close to Greg as pointing out that both Bryant and A-Rod had their procedures done when their knees were finished with rehabilitation and healing. In Oden’s case, though, the doctors recommended he undergo the non-evasive treatment in early May, just three months after his last microfracture surgery. Apparently Greg’s situation is that dire. New news is good news, though. In his interview with former AAU teammate Mark Titus, Oden pointed out that he was ready to sit out the entire 2012-13 season, even though Broussard mentions the possibility that Greg could return from a microfracture surgery midway through the year, which would involve about a 12-month rehabilitation. Personally, we like Oden’s instincts in this situation. Finding a team in the 2013 offseason to work slowly through 2013-14 with would mean Oden would be working his way back into NBA shape during a campaign he would only turn 26 years of age in, midway through the year. Sure, that birthday comes a good 6 1/2 years after he was drafted by Portland, but 26 is still young even by NBA standards, and Oden presumably would have all the chances in the world to eke out a career with possible medical advancements that weren’t in place in Portland at his disposal. This, we keep telling ourselves, is very do-able. 2012 might seem a million years removed some three years from now, when a healthy Greg Oden in whatever uniform is contributing on both ends at an age that sticks him still a year or two away from his athletic prime. Toss in the lack of wear and tear that he, sadly, missed out on between 2007 and 2013? This could still have a happy, and remarkable, ending. More NBA news from Yahoo! Sports:

RGIII gave Jay Leno a pair of socks, then laughed heartily at his jokes (VIDEO)
Robert Griffin III was at ease in a Thursday appearance on “The Tonight Show,” riffing with host Jay Leno, playfully teasing guest Hugh Laurie (“House”) and revealing that two massage chairs will be his first big purchase with his NFL money. In the first clip, Griffin talks about his marriage proposal and gives Leno and Laurie a gift. I don’t know whether Griffin was fed the line about House’s tie or whether he ad-libbed it, but it was impeccably timed and perfectly delivered either way. /swoon Yes, his adidas shirt says “Don’t be Trippin.” In the next clip (which is actually the first clip chronologically), Griffin talks about his socks, his biggest game and gives a shout out to military families. I’m a little worried that RGIII may not be totally genuine. It’s not because of his pitch-perfect stories or All-American upbringing or his wits, charisma and smile, but because he laughs a little too hard at Leno’s jokes. Like way too hard.

Chris Birdman Andersen under investigation by Internet child pornography unit
Chris Andersen (Noah Graham/ Getty)On Thursday night, the Denver Nuggets are set to face the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 6 of their first-round series, their second consecutive elimination game. Yet one of their players now must deal with a much greater issue. Thursday afternoon, Douglas County sheriff’s deputies entered and searched Andersen’s home in an investigation related to their Internet Crimes Against Children unit. The Nuggets, in turn, have excused Andersen indefinitely from all team functions. P. Solomon Banda of the Associated Press has more details: Sheriff’s spokesman Ron Hanavan confirmed that the search took place Thursday. Andersen has not been arrested and Hanavan said no arrest warrant has been issued. The department began investigating Andersen in February after receiving information from a law enforcement agency in California. Hanavan declined to release details, including the nature of any pending charges, citing an ongoing investigation. He said they’re asking that the case be sealed. Andersen answered the door at his Larkspur, Colo., home, about 40 miles south of Denver, and let deputies in, said Deborah Sherman, another sheriff’s spokesperson.”He did cooperate. He spoke with deputies,” Sherman said. The unit investigating Andersen investigates child porn, Internet luring, child predators and child pornography. The sheriff’s department stated that they have taken computer hardware from Andersen’s home, but they neglected to specify exactly what was taken. Obviously, not much is yet known about the investigation or exactly what Andersen may have done wrong. Without an arrest or specific charges, it’s best not to speculate too much. The Nuggets will not necessarily miss Andersen on the court he had yet to play a minute in the Lakers series and has seen his role diminished as JaVale McGee, Kenneth Faried, Timofey Mozgov and Kosta Koufos have earned more minutes in Denver’s big-man rotation. Nevertheless, this incident could be a distraction for the entire franchise. Andersen has been a controversial figure before and was suspended from the NBA for two seasons due to several failed drug tests forunspecified”drugs of abuse,” but this investigation is an entirely different kind of serious. We’ll continue to update you as more details emerge, but for now we’re going to deal look at what’s known and not draw too many conclusions in either direction.

Oudin, star at ’09 US Open, gets French wild card (Yahoo! Sports)
Melanie Oudin was introduced to the world – and to the notion of outsized expectations – when she was an unseeded and unknown 17-year-old from Marietta, Ga., who upset Maria Sharapova during a captivating run to the 2009 U.S. Open quarterfinals. The going’s been rough since: a 2-8 record at Grand Slam tournaments, plenty of other early exits elsewhere, too, and a ranking that dropped from a high of 31st to 370th. She didn’t even get into the Australian Open in January after losing her opening match in qualifying. Now 20 and trying to work her way back, Oudin is heading to the main draw of the French Open this month after earning a wild card at low-level clay-court tournaments in the United States. ”There’s always ups and downs in everyone’s tennis career. For me, this was definitely the down part of my career. Hopefully there won’t be too many other down parts. But what matters is how you come out of your downs,” Oudin said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press on Monday, the words delivered in that familiar rat-a-tat style of hers. ”Ups are always great. But what really makes you a great tennis player is how you deal with the losses and come out of a slump.” The kid whose shoes were stamped with the word ”Believe” during those magical, memorable two weeks in New York more than 2 1/2 years ago is using that mantra again. For whatever ups and downs Oudin already has lived as a pro tennis player – at ages when some people are in high school or college – she sounded a positive note Monday. ”I’ve handled myself well. I’ve really tried to keep going. Not getting down on myself. Never giving up. And playing tennis again for the reasons I love play: Not for the winning and losing, but because I love to play and I love competing and playing in all the tournaments,” Oudin said. ”I’m definitely doing better now. I feel like my game is coming into place again and I’m starting to get more confidence. I’m going in the right direction now.” She’s 270th in Monday’s WTA rankings, too low to even get invited to the qualifying rounds for the French Open, the year’s second Grand Slam tournament. But the U.S. Tennis Association gets two wild cards for Paris that it can hand out however it wants (the French federation gets a pair for the U.S. Open in exchange). This year, the USTA awarded those wild cards based on results at recent events. Brian Baker of Nashville, Tenn., got the men’s invitation, and Oudin got the women’s, thanks in large part to winning a USTA Pro Circuit title at Charlottesville, Va. ”It’s really good for me to come through and win a tournament, because I hadn’t won a tournament in a while,” Oudin said. ”I definitely see it as an accomplishment. Getting the main-draw wild card gives me a huge opportunity to do well and hopefully I can get some matches there and get my ranking back up.” She started training with USTA coaches in Florida in October, then moved to New York to work with Jay Gooding and Jorge Todero of the USTA a little more than two months ago. Their focus is on fitness and confidence, more than any particular stroke. ”She’s already been there and done that. She was up to 30th in the world. She was playing at a high level for a year or two. Tennis is not the issue. It’s mental and physical,” Gooding said. ”She’s already proven that she could do it, and as long as she got her head back in a good place, she knew she could start winning again.” Whatever progress is being made now, the real goal is to start off 2013 fresh as Oudin moves into what Gooding referred to as ”her second career.” ”What we want to learn from is what she did after the U.S. Open that year. She could have managed her schedule a bit better. She played too much. Got a little burned out. Did a little too many media commitments, maybe,” he said. ”It’s not like she’s the first to ever go through that. It happens a lot, where people skyrocket up and then the next year is the difficult one. Having that experience, maybe she can do things a little bit different.” Instead of looking at what happened in 2009 as a burden, Oudin is trying to find inspiration from it. ”It’s something I’ll always be able to look back on and feel like: I did this, and I can do it again. It’s something I can work toward. And I’m really looking forward to having another great run like that again. I just don’t know when it will come. Just like I didn’t know that was going to come out of nowhere,” she said. ”I just have to keep working hard,” Oudin added, ”and remember that I can compete with the best in the world.” — Howard Fendrich can be reached at http://twitter.com/HowardFendrich

NASCAR returns to Rockingham with Truck Series (AP)
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) There’s no way to figure out just how much Andy Hillenburg has put into Rockingham Speedway, the track he bought at auction for $4.4 million with no guarantee he’d ever return racing to ”The Rock.” Between the money spent to open a dormant race track, the long hours required of a track operator and the lessons learned in understanding how to promote races, Hillenburg has made an unbelievable commitment to the Rockingham, N.C., racetrack. ”All I have,” he said when asked what he’s put into the track. ”Everything I ever worked for I’ve put into this, because I believe in what we are doing.” NASCAR makes its official return to Rockingham on Sunday when the Trucks Series races around the beloved mile-long flat oval. It will be the first NASCAR-sanctioned event since 2004, when a long-term realignment plan led NASCAR to abandon its grass-roots tracks in favor of building up bigger markets such as California, Chicago and Kansas City. Track operator International Speedway Corp., the sister company to NASCAR, gave one of Rockingham’s race dates to California. The track eventually was sold to rival Speedway Motorsports Inc., which ”transferred” the second race date to its Texas track. With NASCAR no longer on the schedule, SMI shuttered the track and put it up for auction in 2007. Enter Hillenburg, who had done just about every job imaginable in racing. As a driver, Hillenburg won an ARCA championship, competed in the Indianapolis 500, made 29 starts spanning all three of NASCAR’s national divisions and finished a career-best third driving in the 1999 Nationwide Series race at Daytona for Joe Gibbs Racing. As a team owner, he’s fielded cars in ARCA and NASCAR’s Truck Series, and owns and operates the Fast Track High Performance Driving School. And, he’s been an actor and adviser in several racing-themed movies, including ”Talladega Nights.” So with old North Carolina Speedway up for sale, Hillenburg jumped into the bidding and won. Then he went to work – initially from his cell phone because, of course, there were no working phones at the track – to bring racing back to The Rock. First came an ARCA race, in 2008, then smaller series began racing at the track. And because there were no NASCAR-sanctioned races at the track, Hillenburg was able to rent it out to teams as a test track. His racing school also uses the facility. But his eye was always on the big prize. ”I had hoped for it, but being in the sport my whole life, I knew it wasn’t something to take for granted as ‘Oh, we’ll get a NASCAR race,”’ he said. ”I knew what we needed to do, and I got us 90 percent there before we ever had a meeting with NASCAR. We couldn’t go to them until I felt like I had a handle on being able to promote races and could show NASCAR the track deserved a race.” The first official meeting was at Darlington last May, when Hillenburg brought the mayor of Rockingham, the city manager and two county commissioners with him. ”I found out then what the other 10 percent was that we had to do to get a NASCAR race, and knowing when they like to finalize the schedule, my timetable was to have it all done at the end of August,” he said. The track still needed SAFER barriers, and there were updates required to the timing and scoring system. Once those were done, NASCAR was ready to give him a race date. ”It was a heartbreaking loss when the decision was made to leave, but that’s now in the past and we are focused on the future,” Rockingham mayor Gene McLaurin said. ”We never gave up hope that one day we would welcome NASCAR back home to Rockingham Speedway. ”Andy Hillenburg and his team have done a great job, and our community has rallied behind him and supported the effort every step of the way. The welcome mat is out, and we are proud to once again be a part of the NASCAR family.” The return has been met with enthusiasm throughout the industry. The track was always considered a driver favorite, and its demise was generally attributed to its location and lack of updated amenities. ”It’s one of the coolest race tracks we ever ran on,” veteran Jeff Burton said. ”It was one of the hardest tracks we would go to. You would take off and have new tires on and you would feel like Richard Petty. And a few laps later you would feel like you had never been on a race track before in your life. ”It was one of those race tracks that I got a chance to race on when I was growing up and moving into the larger divisions. And it’s really cool to see the Truck Series going back there. I actually contemplated trying to run the race.” Because the Sprint Cup Series races at Texas on Saturday night, the Rockingham race falls on an off day for NASCAR’s stars. Kasey Kahne jumped at making a return. He’s forever linked to Rockingham’s history as part of what many consider to be one of the greatest finishes in NASCAR history – in what just happened to be Rockingham’s final race. Kahne, in only his second Cup race, tried to pass Matt Kenseth coming out of the final turn and raced him to the finish line, only to lose by .010 seconds. Kahne is scheduled to race Sunday in a Turner Motorsports truck. ”As soon as I heard that NASCAR was adding the Rockingham truck race to the schedule, I wanted to run it,” said Kahne, who will compete for his fourth win in five career starts. ”I think it is great for the sport and the fans that we are going back to Rockingham.” Hillenburg is anxiously optimistic headed into Sunday’s race and won’t dream beyond this initial NASCAR event. Of course he’d like to bring the second-tier Nationwide Series to The Rock but knows he needs to take it one race at a time. ”This feeling is exactly like strapping up and getting in the car for the beginning of the Indy 500 or the Daytona 500 when you are a rookie,” he said. ”You know you belong there, know you will do a good job, but you haven’t seen it yet. ”Hopefully, we’ll live to fight another day. I understand how the system works. I am not going to make any crazy statements, because that puts NASCAR in a box and that’s not fair to them. But I am very proud to be a part of this, and if we are successful, we’ll see what happens next.”
